“The Difficulty of Democracy” Paul Pierson (Political Science, Berkeley) The Risk of “Democratic Backsliding” in the United States: How Polarization and Inequality Threaten American Democracy

Hollis E. Cornell Auditorium, Goldwin Smith Hall

Prof. Pierson will discuss current dangers to the American constitutional order, emphasizing two causes, the growing inability of the Republican Party to contain extremist forces and the growing capacity of the rich to translate their economic resources into political power. His many influential writings on American politics include American Amnesia: How the War on Government Led Us to Forget What Made America Prosper (2017) andWinner-Take-All Politics: How Washington Made the Rich Richer and Turned Its Back on the Middle Class (2010), both  co-authored with Jacob Hacker, and  Politics in Time: History, Institutions and Social Analysis(2004).
